What We Do

Learning, working together, and reaching out to Ann Arbor and beyond.

Education

Through the FIRST program, our students enjoy hands-on opportunities to learn and practice skills in STEM and business fields.

Teamwork

As The Strange Quarks, we come together to create something greater than ourselves, building a strong and supportive environment for commitment and creativity.

Community

Our team is dedicated to serving our local community in a variety of efforts, from spreading our STEM knowledge through a summer camp to bringing together our team members to volunteer with nonprofit organizations.

Our Season Timeline

Where it all begins

On January 5th, 2019, our team attended the FIRST kickoff event at the University of Michigan, where we learned about this year’s competition, FIRST Deep Space.

Brainstorming

During the first week of build season, our team brainstorms ideas regarding what we want our robot to do during competition, as well as potential methods for achieving those goals.

Designing

During the second week, we choose a general design for our robot and use CAD models to fine-tune the details of what specific components and mechanisms we will need.

Prototyping

During the third week, we prototype our designs to see what works and what doesn't. Whichever design works best is what goes into the final robot.

Building

During weeks four and five, we turn our design into reality by welding, wiring, programming, and constructing our final robot.

More building

During weeks four and five, we turn our design into reality by welding, wiring, programming, and constructing our final robot.

Testing and practicing

During week six, we test our final robot to ensure that everything works how it’s supposed to, and we give our drivers the time to practice with the robot before competition begins.

Competing

Our team is currently registered for two district competitions, one in Belleville on March 7-9 and one in Lincoln on March 21-23. We hope to participate in the Michigan State Championship and the Detroit World Championship as well.

Team Culture

We are all friends and colleagues who work together to create and compete.

Let's make something great together.
